Velie Cup
Short Hills leads the all-time inter-club competition first established in 1929 with 33 victories following a 2022 victory in early June. The East Moline-based club has been the leader since 1941. Short Hills teams won 11 of the first 20 competitions and won 7 out 8 from 2011-2018.
Named for W.L. Velie and his son, Willard Jr., the Velie Memorial Cup was contested annually until inclement weather forced its first cancellation in 2019 and the COVID-19 pandemic forced a second in 2020. The competitions once drew galleries in the thousands and were covered closely by the local media. The competition spawned the Mueller Cup for higher handicapped members of each club, and the Waterman Cup, an inter-club competition among women. The Sunshine Cup is an inter-club competition among junior golfers.
The original clubs in the competition were Short Hills, Arsenal CC, Davenport CC and the former Black Hawk Hills CC, which was purchased and made public by Rock Island County in 1944 and became Indian Bluff GC in 1948. Oakwood CC replaced Black Hawk Hills in the Cup competitions in 1943. Mill Creek CC (now Pinnacle CC) joined in 1964. Crow Valley CC was added in 1970. Arsenal CC, the original club and course in the Quad Cities, became a public course in 2010. In 2016, Geneva CC of Muscatine joined the competition.
